Transformation

Hybrid

As we accelerate through the Digital Age, and we see this drive further acceleration and proliferation of novel technologies, it becomes harder to make good decisions. If we are to be successful we need to think differently about Technology, and our relationship to that technology. In this session we will explore that new way of thinking.

Digital transformation is up there on the 'post-pandemic' poster phrases along with 'new normal', 'different normal', 'digitization' and 'data defined everything', buzzword bingo abounds, but the reality is we are fundamentally changed by the last two years, personally, professionally, operationally and technically. This massive acceleration in the technification of our daily lives, our organizations and businesses, has brought some stark realisations on our relationship to technology, but we are still slow to learn those lessons and to effect the change that is needed to truly fly given our new freedoms (yes freedoms!) . In this session Vicky will share some of what she has learned from living inside the Great Digital Transformation.

Who is this session perfect for?

You are making technology decisions to future proof your organization, you are working on your Digital Transformation and you need to set yourself up for ongoing success as technology evolves.

African Women In Technology: Challenges & Opportunities

    Esther Ninsiima Nyinamwiru

    8 June

    Skills

    Virtual

It shouldn’t be about acknowledging the African women in tech success stories alone but also about providing resources to upcoming women. It is one thing to inspire these women to come into tech and it is another to provide them with requisite skills and opportunities to act on these skills.

At the end of the day, the great aim of education is not knowledge but action. While there are some making an investment in training these ladies, there are fewer opportunities for them to act on their knowledge attained.

Why do I represent African women in technology? Africa’s greatest resource is human capital and it offers a tremendous untapped economic potential that is women. If properly equipped and economically empowered, women could substantially contribute to the growth of the economy at household and national levels. That being said, there is a significant shortage of IT professionals in Europe today why not look at Africa as an alternative for sourcing tech talent? These female developers are continuously upskilling themselves but lack opportunities to compete at an international level. The world has opened up to remote work and many African countries are in the same time zone as many of the Nordic countries, with a time difference of 1-3 hours, which allows them to work in real-time. We need to extend and open up opportunities in internships, entry-level, junior, and intermediate roles to these women in IT and have extremely brilliant developers joining your team remotely, and support in building your products while they get an opportunity to work in a challenging environment and get paid at above market value.

    Session Key takeaways:

    • Learn how do we support African Women in Technology?
    • Learn why Africa should be looked at as an alternative for sourcing tech talent to resolve IT professional shortage in Europe.

Effective decision-making in product development can often appear to be natural, But, the reality is that decision-making isn’t an art, but a science that can be broken down, studied, and adopted. Once you figure out what you need to know based on the decision you’re trying to make, it becomes a muscle most of us can train.

And while it may be obvious that those who are leaders (or on their path towards becoming leaders) absolutely have to hone their decision-making skills, the same holds true for anyone working on product and whose role requires that they make choices every day: from which business objectives to prioritize to which user needs to address, what to scope into a release, or, perhaps even more critically, what to scope out. What's more, making product decisions that are based on user insights with ease and confidence is also essential towards earning the type of autonomy and ownership most of us seek in our roles. So, overall, it’s an indispensable skill to grow, and this talk aims to shed light on how to do so by leveraging the power of evidence-based insights.

In most of today's ultra-fast-moving tech companies, timely and effective decisions can make the difference between sinking and swimming. And, decision-making is no longer just relegated to leaders and executives, but anyone seeking autonomy and ownership while working on and shipping products.

While effective decision-making can seem daunting, it's also something that's within everyone's reach. This talk will explore how to analyze the parameters of the day-to-day decisions that need to be made in a product development environment, as well as the types of questions, methods, and insights that can help provide the information we need to better inform those decisions. The goal is for anyone watching to walk away with a clear process for approaching decision-making with confidence and ease.

    Session Key Takeaways:

    • How to balance speed, risk, and completeness of information when deciding how to approach making a decision
    • The questions to ask and insights to seek from your users and team in order to make effective decisions at every stage of product development
    • How to mix quantitative and qualitative sources of information effectively in order to paint a better picture of the situation

Who is this session perfect for?

    • You work on software product, and:
    • You are in a role that requires that you make decisions regularly e.g. leader, product/project manager, designer, engineer, etc.
    • You are in a role in which you inform decisions made by others e.g. researcher, analyst, data scientist, etc.

I believe it’s an inflection point for women in tech. The tech ecosystem is heavily investing in attracting and retaining more diverse perspectives and the statistics are beginning to take a positive turn as we begin to see more women across all levels. This is encouraging news, but we must also be realistic – impactful change and progress will take time.

So how do we harness the positive momentum when most women will continue to be the only one – or one of few – in spaces that were not designed for us?

In this session, we will discuss how to best navigate cultures with deeply embedded power structures, sharing real stories and pragmatic actions. It starts with understanding the power that comes from recognizing our own value and silencing self-doubt – the power of one. Leveraging that confidence, we start to use our voice – for ourselves and others. But there is strength in numbers, so we must amplify our voice through a strategically curated community.

    Session Key Takeaways:

    • How to challenge our most damaging bias – understand why it exists, accept it, and learn how to minimize it
    • How to shift the power dynamic and take back our narrative by using our voice – for ourselves and others
    • How to create a personal Advisory Board to amplify your voice

    Security

    In-Person Only

All attendees will be part of the Internet of Everything community. Whether they are users, developers, manufacturers, policymakers or parents we all have a responsibility to embrace and co-secure. Embracing innovation but in a responsible manner from the outset - secure by design is a challenge but very much an opportunity for change.

When the boundaries are unknown how do you stay secure? With the Internet of Everything, everything is part of one blended interconnected world. When good and malicious players are in the same place how do you create a safe place? There is nowhere to hide and no such concept as a complete disconnect. We are kidding ourselves if we believe local policy enforcement can work or that endpoint security alone is sufficient.

This is a world where private information no longer exists. It resides in different services worldwide and we are collectively responsible for securing this landscape. Application creators, service providers, product development and cloud platforms all need security by design. Security planning and integration from the outset. The Internet of Everything offers everyone – good or bad – opportunities to explore and develop. The stakes are much higher. We need to rethink security. We need a new security mindset.

    Session Key Takeaways

The Dawn of a New Security Mindset

    Christine Bejerasco

    Security

    Skills

    • Develop a greater understanding of the current global threat landscape and step inside the world of the hacker.
    • Hear about the opportunities to co-secure across the technology ecosystem.
    • Return to your own personal and business environment with thoughts of how we can come together to build a safer world for the future.

From Zero to a Hundred: An Unconventional Journey To Becoming A Startup CTO

    Sue Li

    8 June

    Non-Technical

    In-Person Only

In 2022, Sifted compiled the first list of all female CTOs in Europe - and there’s only 130 of them. If we want to have more women in leadership positions in startups and technologies, maybe we need to start looking beyond traditional roles.

Does a CTO always need to come from a purely technical background? Learn about one woman’s nonlinear path to becoming a CTO.

    Session Key takeaways:
    • Discover the ability to learn new skills, adapt to different working environments and challenges, communicate with diverse groups of people, and create structure out of ambiguity is just as important as predicting success in the workspace as the result of a technical test
    • Define your own path instead of letting your past define you. If organizations do not foster this, then we will always be stuck with old ways of working.
    • Technology is a tool, not a goal. The latest technology in itself has limited value unless we find the best ways to apply it to solve our societal problems. High-quality coding education, especially targeting women, will be key to unlocking this potential.

This analysis provides a broad perspective of carbon, water, and land footprints due to worldwide data storage and throws some light on the real impact of data centres globally.

Internet data centres have received significant scientific, public and media attention due to the challenges associated with their greenhouse gas, water, and land footprint. This resource greedy data services sector continues to rapidly grow driven by data storage, data mining and file sharing activities by a wide range of end-users. A fundamentally important question then arises; what impact does data storage have on the environment and is it sustainable? Water is used extensively in data centres, both directly for liquid cooling and indirectly to generate electricity. Data centres house a huge number of servers, which consume a vast amount of energy to respond to information requests and store files and large amounts of resulting data. In this talk the environmental footprint of global data storage is examined to throw light on this data sustainability issue.

Who is this session perfect for? This session is for you if you are a sustainability or environmental manager and or Chief Technologist in any organization that has to manage storage of digital datasets.

    Data

    Premium Ticket Holders Only

    In-Person Only

MLOps stands for Machine Learning Operations but in reality: MLOPS ⇒ Efficiency + Scalability + Risk Reduction

Companies increasingly depend on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) to provide them with a competitive edge, as a consequence, ML models have become relatively fast and cheap to build. However, more than half of these machine learning models never make it into production, leading to a missed opportunity for the business. Automation and simplicity are key to drive impact at scale and this is where MLOps shines, with tools and methods that solve this problem in a reliable and automated way.

As exciting as this new era of artificial intelligence and machine learning may seem, with machine learning models running amok, this will have a significant impact on how we work, live, and interact with one another. Thus, transparency across the entire model lifecycle to not only better understand predictions, but also to find problem drivers will be crucial and Responsible AI will be a must.

Are you ready to unravel some black box models?

    Session Key Takeaways:

    • Explore what MLOps is and WHY you should care
    • Understand the components of MLOps lifecycle and where to look for potential bottlenecks
    • Learn how to push towards a more responsible approach to ML and AI for all our sakes!

The session is for you if:

    • You're from any data related field: Data Engineer, Data Science, ML Engineer, Data Analyst, Platform Architect
    • You're curious about AI, ML and data in general and would like to learn more
